A tour to rediscover the Milanese countryside, in the surroundings of Cascina Battivacco
We begin this special guided tour around Cascina Battivacco just outside the city, where the metropolitan fabric makes way for the poetic gentleness of the Lombard countryside. Hard to think of finding, just a stone’s throw from the heart of Milan, such a natural oasis? Yet here, still in the territory of the city, at 111 Barona Street and a short distance from the Milanese neighborhood of the same name, stands Cascina Battivacco, a fine example of rural architecture that has also been redeveloped for agritourism purposes and a privileged starting point for discovering the rural areas of the Bassa Milanese.
The medieval history of the farmstead
Positioned at the highest point of the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano and between the Navigli Grande and Pavese canals, the farmstead now managed by the Fedeli family traces its historical origins back to a distant time, to the 12th century, when the southern territory of the Milanese countryside was already fully exploited for its rural vocation, thanks to the creation of the marcite in the so-called medieval Grange, linked to various monastic orders. In this place already documented in 997 A.D. only much later, in 1879, the farmstead was donated to theOspedale Maggior of Milan, going to enrich the precious heritage of the “Ca’ Granda” of the Milanese, which is why, even today, the Cascina and its territory are part of the innovative Oasi Ca’ Granda project. Since the end of the 19th century, more time has passed but, despite the constant modernization of agricultural technologies, the place that surrounds the Cascina Battivacco still retains the charm of past centuries and hides a story that deserves to be told while crossing irrigation ditches, rice fields and cultivated fields, just a stone’s throw from the city. A unique rural landscape, part of the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano and of thenon-profit association Parco delle Risaie, to which the great environmental value and an extraordinary the historical-cultural richness are recognized…. all to be discovered with our guides!

At the gates of Milan, an area to discover, where you can live unique experiences, immersed in a nature rich in beauty and history.
Among meadows and woods, along canals and resurgences, you can admire ancient farmsteads, chapels, churches and abbeys donated over the centuries by many benefactors to the “Ca’ Granda,” as the current Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico was affectionately called since 1456.
An extraordinary legacy now enhanced by the Ca’ Granda Heritage Foundation which, thanks to the Oasi Ca’ Granda project, revives this great treasure of nature and culture by proposing its discovery.
