Porta Nuova neighborhood: the future is here
A special guided tour to admire the palaces that arose with the opening of Expo 2015: a challenge to the future that sought to consecrate Milan as a European capital in its own right, launching itself into a cutting-edge architectural future in full compliance with global eco-consciousness. Among stories and trivia, you will discover the history of the neighborhood and the birth of the first large skyscrapers that permanently changed the city’s skyline.
The exaltation of architecture
The route will take you to Piazza Gae Aulenti, among the most representative buildings in the Milanese urban center: the verdant Bosco Verticale designed by Stefano Boeri, a symbol of Milanese innovation throughout the world (so much so that it has won several international awards), theUnicredit Tower by César Pelli, towering over the square in front of its 226-meter-high spire, a true architectural jewel, the so-called Diamantone, whose shape is reminiscent, precisely, of a diamond, which dialogues with the more historic architecture of Piazza Repubblica. Then there will be no shortage of visits, alongside the gray skyscrapers, to the Library of Trees, Milan’s most modern green lung. And at the end of the tour, it will be spontaneous to wonder whether these hi-tech cathedrals will really succeed in supplanting in the imagination and hearts of the Milanese those architectural masterpieces that have made the city’s skyline unmistakable since the postwar period… Certainly they can never replace them, but they can certainly marry with them to create the profile of an increasingly attractive city that turns its gaze to the future while keeping its past well in mind.
