Brera walking tour, the authentic soul of Old Milan
The Brera district and area, with its bohemian atmosphere, preserves authentic testimonies of Old Milan, lost but never forgotten and described by artists, journalists, and intellectuals who found inspiration here. This trip to Old Brera, accompanied by our guides, can only retrace the traces of the canals that crossed this corner of the city, making it similar to a small Venice: the Conca dell’Incoronata studied by Leonardo da Vinci, the infamous Tombone di San Marco and the houses overlooking the old urban naviglio, where even the writer Dino Buzzati lived as soon as he arrived in Milan. It is no coincidence that it was here, on Via Solferino, that the historic headquarters of the Corriere della Sera was located, because every day, from the Naviglio della Martesana, the reels of paper necessary for the printing of the historic Milanese newspaper arrived. Moreover, if Brera is now called the “little Montmartre” it is because the area has always enclosed the most creative and picturesque soul of Milan, from historic workshops and artist studios to places like Bar Jamaica, notoriously frequented by Milanese intellectuals and artists who gathered around theAcademy of Fine Arts.
Guided tour from Brera to Porta Nuova: the Milan that is transformed
A guided tour from the ancient heart of Brera to the futuristic skyscrapers of Porta Nuova to travel through the continuous transformations of the city of Milan, being enchanted by its thousand faces. Just where in the past the waters of the Martesana Canal entered the city, today the new Milanese skyline finds its place, arising from an unprecedented urban redevelopment project. From the cobbled streets of Brera, continuing along what used to be the route of the Naviglio and with a little effort of imagination, it will not be difficult to step into the old Brera (which owes its name to the term “breda,” meaning “wild,” “uncultivated,” like the land that characterized the area) and at the same time, looking around, understand how the city has changed over time. In fact, on the horizon, in the direction of Porta Nuova, the profiles of the skyscrapers between the Porta Garibaldi yard and Piazza della Repubblica stand out, such as theUnicredit Tower, the Diamantone and the Bosco Verticale. Linking these giants is a large and innovative park: the Library of Trees, the final destination of our guided tour, is a contemporary botanical garden right in the heart of the Milan “going up.”
Tour among the closed houses of the Brera district, the Contrada di Tett
With this tour of the Brera area, we are going to discover a different side of the neighborhood, revealing the secrets of what was once the red light district of Milan, among closed houses and mysterious and … spicy stories. Dedicated to the history ofEros in the city of Milan, our guided tour takes place between Via San Carpoforo, Via Madonnina, Via Fiori Chiari and Via Fiori Scuri, the stately streets of Brera where brothels and popular stores were once hidden. Here many were the brothels and places of pleasure, designed for all budgets and flourishing until the late 1950s, and it was precisely this that earned the Brera district the nickname Contrada di Tett. We will, however, reach the borders of the Brera district, in the shadow of the towers of the Castello Sforzesco. Why the castle? Because precisely two sculptures found at the Milanese fortress, the statue of St. John of Nepomuk and the “scandalous” relief of Porta Tosa, can take us back in time to experience the atmosphere of the most “clandestine” Milan.
