Sant’Eustorgio and the treasures of Milan
A guided tour of the Basilica of Sant’Eustorgio is a historical and artistic tour that you cannot miss on your Milan city tour. The Basilica of Sant’Eustorgio, which overlooks the square of the same name near Porta Ticinese, on the edge of the Park of the Basilicas, encompasses within and without itself a mixture of history and art that our tour guides will help you understand step by step.
Dedicated according to tradition to Eustorgio Bishop of Milan, this basilica of early Christian origin, which has seen several reconstructions from the Roman and then Renaissance periods, would contain the tombs of the Three Kings.
The Three Kings, right in Sant’Eustorgio
In a mixture of folk tradition and historical nods, the Basilica sees its founding in the 4th century AD after the chariot carrying the remains of the Magi from Constantinople to the Basilica of St. Thecla mysteriously stopped in front of where it stands today. Our licensed guides will point out how vast the medieval imprint is on this basilica despite its ancient foundation. This reconstruction was also due in part to the famous Plunder of Milan perpetrated by Frederick I of Swabia, known as Barbarossa. On this occasion, Barbarossa stole the relics and brought them to Cologne. Legend has it that only thanks to the intervention of the Milanese, this did not happen.
The Lombard Renaissance in Milan: the Portinari Chapel
Beyond the folklore popularity and the historicity of the events, our guided tour will show you the artistic jewels enclosed within the basilica. The princely work is the Portinari Chapel, a rare example of Lombard Renaissance art that has remained intact to this day, with its decorations and angel friezes, but especially with the frescoes by Vincenzo Foppa, a model artist in the use of “Lombard perspective” bathed in light. At the center of the Chapel then, stands in all its splendor of decorated pinnacles and Carrara marble, the Ark of St. Peter Martyr, a sculptural work by Giovanni Balduccio. Related to it are innumerable anecdotes and mysteries that our guides will be happy to tell you to stir your imagination in front of an artistic masterpiece of the Italian Late Middle Ages.
A fascinating guided tour suspended between art, history and legend to Sant’Eustorgio, one of the oldest and most important churches in Milan.
