Titian and the image of women in sixteenth-century Venice, a unique exhibition
Crossing the threshold of the Royal Palace, from next February 23, will mean entering the fascinating world of the Venetian sixteenth century, to admire masterpieces that tell the story of the art of Titian and his contemporaries: Giorgione, Lotto, Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese or Palma the Elder, famous for that painting made of light and color typical of the lagoon production.
Feminine beauty, sensuality and elegance are the undisputed stars of many of the works on display, brought together in a unique exhibition, expertly orchestrated by the curatorship of Sylvia Ferino-Pagden, director of the picture gallery of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The prestigious Viennese museum institution-as well as the main lender of so many of the masterpieces on display-has collaborated with the City of Milan – Culture for the realization of the exhibition, richly divided into eight exhibition sections.
The itinerary will be all played, with subtle variations, on the female theme: theimage of woman in the round, from her social role in the socio-political context of 16th-century Venice to aesthetic and moral canon in the treatises of the time. Art, poetry, myth, history and literature will guide us through a complex scenario that is as fascinating as ever, a metaphor for the thousand reflections of the Serenissima’s lagoon landscape!
