Children’s visit to the Crypt of St. Sepulchre: a hunt for the… symbol!

Looking for a different afternoon, to let the children free to explore a new place hidden in the underground fabric of downtown Milan? A children’s visit to the Crypt of San Sepolcro is just the right experience! In the complex of the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, the Crypt of the Church of San Sepolcro is a jewel of the Milan underground that tells a millenary story of layering and reuse, with a sensitivity in some respects close to that of the modern recycling of materials.
Theguided itinerary leads on a hunt for the curious symbols that the building hides: enigmatic signs on the stone slabs of the flooring, multiform stars painted on the ceiling, lions, swords and a radiant sun… what will be their meaning? Little visitors, accompanied by our guides, will discover the story behind the Crypt’s architecture and decorations. It will be the symbols themselves that will open a window to the past: how did the inhabitants of Roman Milan live, which right where San Sepolcro stands possessed its nerve center in the space of the Forum? What connection exists between the Crypt and the adventures of crusaders and pilgrims returning from the Holy Land after the year 1000? And finally, how did Milan change from the Renaissance onward, when the great names of Leonardo da Vinci and St. Charles Borromeo were linked to the Crypt? The memory of colors, fabrics, precious materials is intertwined with the tale of the past, in a journey between different but equally fascinating eras.

“Recreate your symbol” in the creative workshop.

After exploring the Crypt, room for creativity for our children! In the hall of the Roman Forum, it is time for the creative workshop designed to rework the ideas learned during the guided tour. Once the favorite symbol has been chosen, each child will be able to personalize it by experimenting with different artistic techniques and using recycled materials. The result will be a symbol with a unique meaning, a reminder of the experience lived in the Crypt of San Sepolcro, on the trail of the past.

The visit with workshop, destinata for children aged 4 to 10 years, includes the presence of an adult chaperone during the course of the activity..
