Descending the steps, one begins a journey through centuries of history: from the cult of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, through the Crusades and even crossing paths with the figure of Leonardo Da Vinci. One of the places that tell of the city’s Roman past, even before the Medieval one. The history of the Crypt and the Church of St. Sepulchre begins around 1030, the year of its foundation. Even Leonardo Da Vinci studied its layout and conformation, erected where the site once stood where the Romans managed trade in ancient Mediolanum. It is compelling to discover from Leonardo’s own drawings that the Crypt has remained virtually intact and unchanged all this time…More than a millennium of history!
