Frida Kahlo
Born in Coyoacán, a suburb of Mexico City, in 1907, Frida Kahlo began painting and, producing her first works, and found her own wealth where many would have found only despair: already stricken with polio and having become claudicant when she was a child, Kahlo discovered her particular artistic vein precisely during a difficult convalescence forced into bed for long periods following an accident that, when she was only 18, gave her broken bones in her spine and terrible pain.
There is no doubt that Frida Kahlo is a central figure in Mexican art and the most celebrated Latin American painter of the 20th century

Frida fell in love with Diego Rivera, a Mexican painter and muralist, with whom she married in 1929 and with whom she experienced an intense and tormented love affair, characterized by a shared passion for art and Rivera’s constant betrayals, which caused Frida no small amount of suffering.
Frida Kahlo’s art, and works, are inextricably intertwined with her life: her introspection, symbolized by her numerous self-portraits, combined with a certain kind of ironic surrealism, prompted her to include various dreamlike and surreal elements in her paintings; the Mexican culture of the post-revolution and her interest in communism; and the many pains-both physical and of the soul-that the artist was forced to experience. All of these themes are overbearing protagonists of her works, and the restlessness that has always characterized Frida is the common thread of this new exhibition hosted at the Fabbrica del Vapore with the emblematic title “Chaos Within.”
Frida is a pop icon. Popular is her physical appearance, which has now become iconic because of her unkempt eyebrows, roses in her hair, and wide, colorful skirts.

The exhibition “Frida Kahlo – The Chaos Within” at the Fabbrica del Vapore
Thanks to the exhibition “Frida Kahlo – The Chaos Within,” visitors will experience the thrill of being transported to early 20th century Mexico, living in Frida’s places, seeing her clothes, reading her letters, and deeply understanding Kahlo’s relationship with art, politics, the culture of her time, and her relationship with herself.
This itinerary intends to take the viewer inside the reality of the Mexican artist through the use of various multimedia and interactive content, consisting mostly of modlight format works, photographs of Frida’s works, pages from her diaries, reconstructions of her beloved Casa Azul, the birthplace where she lived most of her existence, author’s portraits, as well as other elements directly inspired by her costumes such as clothes or jewelry.
The exhibition constitutes a true immersive and sensory journey inside Frida’s life, tracing her most important events and milestones: from her health problems to her difficulties in love affairs, from her passion for politics and social issues to the birth and development of her iconic artistic style.
The exhibition route
You can visit the Frida Kahlo exhibition in Milan inside the Fabbrica del Vapore and starting October 10, 2020.
The entrance features blow-ups of Frida and her most famous works, animated projections that make the artist the protagonist of her paintings, and a timeline that punctuates the main events of Kahlo’s life.
Also welcoming the visitor are some quotes from the artist, his famous photographs, and reproductions of some of the clothes of the time.
In the next spaces are the painstakingly detailed reconstructions of Frida’s heartlands, the intimate spaces where she lived and painted throughout her life: her studio, bedroom and the garden of Casa Azul, complete with parrots and monkeys.
Next, there is an extensive collection of shots that Colombian photographer Leo Matiz, as well as a close friend of the painter, dedicated to Frida Kahlo: the viewer can observe the artist inside her home, her intimacy, in magnificent original color and black-and-white shots from the first half of the 20th century.
Matiz considered her to be a very interesting woman, recognized her intelligence and an uncommon strength, and these extraordinary traits are the ones that most emphatically were highlighted by the shots and light captured by the photographer.

Love and passion are certainly not lacking within the itinerary: the very close bond between Frida and her husband and muralist Diego Rivera – one of the most iconic couples of the 20th century – are recalled, as well as the betrayals of both of them with their respective lovers (this is a story reconstructed through touching handwritten letters or typed on a typewriter).
The exhibition also pays tribute to Frida’s unmistakable style, starting with her outfits and jewelry, inspired by Mexican tradition, which became a symbol that persists to this day.
A section of the itinerary is also dedicated to Rivera’s murals, reproduction of some of Frida’s works through modlight backlit paintings, and display of stamps issued by different states and dedicated to the iconic Mexican painter.
